MOAB — Local REALTORS® gave $750 to each of six families who had their homes damaged or destroyed in the June 5 fire at the Pack Creek Mobile Home Park in Moab.
David Carpenter, president of the Southeastern Utah Chapter of REALTORS®, and Randy Day, president of the Utah Association of REALTORS®, distributed the money last week to the affected families.
“I don’t have any words,” Day said. “I’m so thankful that we could help these people. The tears in the victims’ eyes said it all, and it put tears in my eyes too.”
The relief funding comes from the Utah Association of REALTORS® Housing Opportunity Fund. The charity has a special emergency fund to assist families whose homes are damaged or destroyed in disasters.
“These families lost nearly everything in the fire,” Carpenter said. “This money will be a first step in helping the families rebuild as they find new housing and replace essential belongings.”
Since its inception, the REALTORS®’ Housing Opportunity Fund has donated more than $500,000 to help address housing needs in Utah. The fund is a 501(c)3 non-profit that gives to charitable housing programs. The charity is funded through earnest money interest that is generated during the home-purchase process.
“When you have a tragedy like this, it’s important that the community rally to help those in need,” Day said. “I’m fortunate to be part of an organization that cares about helping people and has a process in place to act in times of crisis. What a blessing.”
