Thursday, Sept. 8

8 a.m. - 1 p.m. — Leadership Academy (invitation only)

2016 Leadership Academy participants will conclude a year’s worth of learning during their final session.

1-2:30 p.m. — Grand Assembly
Keynote Speaker: Jessica Buchanan
Location: Ballroom

Kick off Convention with motivational keynote speaker Jessica Buchanan. Jessica was a U.S. aid worker in Somalia who was captured by pirates and rescued by Navy SEALS. She provides an inspirational message about getting through difficult times.

3-7 p.m. — Interactive Safety Trainings - Defensive Tactics for REALTORS®
Instructor: Ari Theodore

There will be four, 45-minute hands-on safety and self-defense trainings. These trainings are limited to 10 people each and will be held on the hour. Please click here to RSVP beforehand to participate in one of these sessions.

3-4 p.m.— MLS Safety Legal Issues for REALTORS®
Instructor: Brad Bjelke, J.D.

Learn the dos and don’ts for staying safe and out of trouble when listing properties on the MLS. This class will cover best practices regarding copyright for listing photos, fair housing, advertising, syndication and more. Also, learn what you should be doing to protect your clients when you list their properties.

3-4 p.m.— HUD Criminal Background Checks

A new rule from HUD may change the way you screen prospective tenants. Avoid fair housing violations and learn what you need to know before you run a criminal background check.

Time is running out to get your Code of Ethics training. If you have not had a qualifying Code of Ethics class since 2013, you must take one before the end of the year to keep your REALTOR® membership. Complete this requirement well ahead of time by taking this class as part of your Convention schedule.

The role of an agent during the transaction has changed as technology has taken over more of the process. From social media protection to cyberscams to next generation transaction platforms, learn tips and tricks to protect clients and listings using technology and good old-fashioned conversation. Attendees will hear an overview of the cyberscam and security landscape and what exactly is impacting real estate. Attendees will also learn tips to protecting clients and listings in a sustainable fashion and will learn how to integrate knowledge into consumer-centric messaging and marketing.

Without realizing it, you may be setting yourself up for failure. Prevent financing problems by properly structuring your transactions and contracts. Avoid as many delays as possible by properly managing issues such as repairs, inducements, deadlines, personal property sales and more. Plus, learn how to interpret the lender’s pre-qualification letter.
